Celebrities “Accidentally” Leak Risqué Photos to Add Twitter Followers

Alison PillEarlier this week, Alison Pill, an actress from HBO’s “The Newsroom,” posted a topless photo to her 20,000 Twitter followers. The photo was quickly deleted but not after it rapidly spread across the internet. Pill said she posted the photo “by accident” and meanwhile, she gained 5000 new followers, mostly guys hoping she would “accidentally” post another. Other celebrities are following suit and “accidentally” posting their own naked pictures to Twitter in hopes of raising their Twitter profile.

BS Gossip talked to People.com editor Mark Golin. He told us that it is no accident celebrities are posting nude photos. “C’mon, how do you accidentally post anything? It’s a way for actors to increase their Twitter following and maybe even get some extra media exposure. People who don’t watch “The Newsroom’ probably never heard of Alison Pill before a topless picture of her was posted online. Now her boobs are all people are talking about! A stunt like this could get an actress better roles or even a higher paycheck. It’s quite brilliant grassroots marketing, when you think about it.”

Since Pill posted her picture on Twitter, several other actresses with a need for attention have posted topless pictures online. Baywatch’s Yasmine Bleeth (remember her?) posted one. After removing the photo she tweeted “Oops. Meant to send that to my boyfriend. Follow me!” Bleeth had 4000 new followers by the end of the day. And “Boy Meets World” actress Danielle Fishel (bet you forgot about her too!) “accidentally” posted a picture of her topless in a bathtub. After removing the photo, she tweeted “My bad. Need computer lessons! Follow me!” Fishel, who had less than 500 Twitter followers yesterday now has over 6000 followers and she has been offered a major role in a new TV pilot. After six years of working the take-out window at Burger King, Fishel quit her job and is now excited about acting once again.

However, the technique hasn’t worked for all celebrities. Yesterday Betty White, who had over 500,000 Twitter followers, “accidentally” posted a picture of her breasts. She removed the photo within the hour and posted a message saying, “Oops. Meant to just post a pic of my naval but my boobs somehow got in the shot too.” Rather than gaining Twitter followers, the actress lost almost half of the ones she had. And after comedian Carrot Top “accidentally” tweeted a picture of his carrot bottom, all four of his followers have unfollowed him. At the time of this post, he had one new follower – Betty White. White even tweeted him a message – “Cute tush freckle boy! If only you were a few years younger…”
